Welcome to Heartwood Forest!
Heartwood Forest is rooted in a simple belief: that learning should feel safe, mistakes are essential, and every unique strength deserves a voice. In our forest, the animals discover that we aren't meant to learn everything in the same way, in the same order, or all at once. Instead, we each carry a "spark"—a unique strength found by doing what we love and practicing, one small, courageous step at a time.
A "Heartwood Collaboration"
These stories are created by Sherry Seto, a former educator and ESL author, and her six-year-old co-author and Creative Director, Annabelle. Together, they bridge the gap between academic rigor and magical wonder to help children realize they are already extraordinary—just as they are!
Meet Some of the Residents in the Forest
The forest is at its brightest when every "room" is filled with a different kind of light.
· Sage Alder Owl: The oldest and wisest soul in the clearing. He believes the secret to a bright life is simple: “We discover who we are by doing what we love—and practicing it a little each day.”
· Red Willow Fox: The forest’s quiet guardian of confidence. She sees what others miss, noticing the second a friend’s "ears droop" and providing the gentle nudge needed to remind them that seeing the world differently is a superpower.
· Sally Salmon: A calm problem-solver navigating the currents of comparison.
· Anna Belle Sparkles & Alchemi Watts: A unicorn and firefly duo proving that magic and logic are stronger together.
· Riki Rabbit: A divergent thinker who sees masterpieces where others see messes.
· Fee Fee & Margie: High-energy monkeys learning how their joyful antics impacts the community.
A Peek Inside the Forest: The First Four Stories
· Book 1: The Great Heartwood Forest Contest What Happens When a Salmon is Asked to Fly? When the forest holds a contest with the same rules for everyone, Sally Salmon feels "not smart" because she can't fly or climb. This story helps students embrace the Power of Yet and find their own "Berry Thicket" niche.
· Book 2: Anna Belle Sparkles and the Hidden Hollow Where Magic Meets STEM. Anna Belle’s telekinesis and Alchemi’s scientific logic are put to the test when their crystal tower keeps tumbling. They learn that success—in building and in learning—requires a strong foundation.
· Book 3: Riki Rabbit and the Twig Hoop From a "Tangled Mess" to a Resilient Masterpiece. Riki sees a rolling hoop where others only see a pile of sticks. With the help of Red Willow Fox and her Anchor Friend, Sammy Skunk, Riki proves that practice is the bridge between a vision and reality.
· Book 4: The Mischievous Monkeys and the Golden Mangos Managing "Monkey Mayhem" through Impact vs. Intent. Fee Fee and Margie are identical twin monkey whirlwinds who love collecting "exotic treasures" (like rhinestone sunglasses and magenta floppy hats). But when their high-energy play leads to The Great Mango Fiasco, the forest floor becomes a sticky disaster! This story follows the twins as they accidentally ruin Professor Purrfect’s ocelot tracking lesson with a "torrential mango storm."
As the twins witness the impact of their "finders-keepers" attitude and their messy antics, they experience a tiny spark of "heart guilt." This leads to the "Silent Fix"—a lesson in restitution where they quietly return the ocelots' bicycles and learn that taking responsibility is the first step toward growth.
Every Heartwood Forest resource is differentiated for Grades 1–5, making it the perfect fit for inclusive classrooms, ESL/ELL support, and homeschool settings.

More on the way!

Teaching English as a Second Language is about more than grammar rules.
It’s about helping students feel safe, confident, and connected to the language they’re learning.
Over time, I’ve found that students—both children and adults—learn best when lessons reflect real-life routines and are supported by clear visuals, structured practice, and consistent classroom routines.
What consistently works in ESL classrooms:
• A supportive, low-pressure environment where mistakes are expected
• Visuals, everyday items, and familiar routines that make language meaningful
• Scaffolded activities that support mixed-level learners
• Consistent modeling and repetition to build real mastery
To support these principles, I created a free 48-page Everyday Routines English Picture Kit.
This downloadable kit includes:
• 48 colorful illustration cards (child-and adult-friendly)
• 48 matching text-only cards (phrases and complete sentences)
• 5 guided lessons (including do, does, and doing)
The kit offers a preview of the visuals, structure, and teaching approach used throughout English Vocabulary and Grammar Basics, Volumes 1 & 2.
